For The Love of A Lady – Worst Nightmare

Craig walked out of the hospital in the bright afternoon sun with Nanine on his right arm.  He looked up at the blue sky, smiled and glanced back at the hospital entrance.

“It sure feels good to get out of there.”

“How are you feeling?”

“Okay.  How have the kids been doing?”

“Okay.  They’ve been asking about you of course.  ‘When is Daddy coming home?  Is he coming home today?  Is he alright?  When can we see him?’”

“What did you tell them?  Do they know what happened?”

“Yes.”  Nanine laughed.  “In fact, they knew before I did.”

They stopped at the car and Nanine opened the door for him.  She helped him get in and buckled the seatbelt for him as he lifted his left arm gingerly.

“I’m not helpless you know,” he said.

“Yes, you are.”  Nanine nodded.  “Until your shoulder heals.  Remember, the doctor said for you not to use it at all for the next week.”

“I remember.”  He grinned at her.  “I already have a doctor at home taking care of me you know.”  He grinned.  “Right?”

“I’m not that kind of doctor.”  Nanine kissed him on the cheek as she shut the door.  “I play the piano.  I don’t do surgery.”

“So, what is this great news you were going to tell me about?” Craig asked as she got into the other door and turned on the car.  “You said you were going to tell me what it was when I got out of the hospital.”

“Oh – I met someone.”

“You what?”

“Someone real special.”  Nanine turned toward him as they drove to the babysitter’s house through the small side streets.

“Who?”  Craig looked at her, his eyes wide.

“Marty Laundry.”

“Marty Laundry?  You mean the Marty Laundry?  The Rock Star?”

“Yes!  the Marty Laundry – the Rock Star!  He wants to use one of my songs on his next album!”

“Really?”

“Really!”  Nanine laughed with joy.

“Oh, honey!  I’m so glad for you.  You deserve it.  With all the hard work you put into your music, it’s about time you got some real recognition for it finally.  Nobody else knows how hard you work and what a perfectionist you are.  Even I can tell that everything you do is beyond excellent.”  Craig laughed.  He rolled his eyes for a moment and laughed nervously.  “You did scare me for a moment though.”

“Scared you?  How?”

“I thought for a moment that you meant that – you know – well, that you’d – ah – met someone else and were going to drop me off at the house and leave me there.”

“Oh no!”  Nanine shook her head.  “Are you kidding me?  I’d never do that!”

“Well, I’m glad, because I’d die without you.”  Craig reached over and kissed her hand. “I simply would die.”

“Craig!”  Nanine frowned.  “You really thought I’d do something like that to you and the kids?”

“No.”  He kissed her hand again.  “Not in my worst nightmare.”
