The Measure of Freedom Lost

Once more upon travelling hence to your century I discover that a presidential election hath taken place.  I remember well the inauguration of President Washington and my good friend Thomas Jefferson’s election.  T’was quite similar to thy time.  Aye – but one would think upon hearing your centuries’ statesmen that the body politick were always a congenial gathering of bonny fellows.  T’would seem they have us believe that politicians were always naught but full of gentlemanliness of comportment, and meek manners of the gentry.  Nay but at times past have I beheld with mine own eyes many were naught but a passel of thuggish rogues, ruffians, and charlatans.

So, for those who now find their pretty positions of power in danger – to act the rogue is truly in their nature.

T’was the same in my time.  Those who loved King George and called themselves Tories lurked in many a church pew and tavern seat.  They would fain have seen the Revolution fail and a return to tyranny, and oppression.  They gained their power from the favor of the king, and were loath to give it up.  So, violence suited their cause – as it would seem to suit those in your day who hate this man since he would seem to diminish their power, and state in life.  I do not know your Donald Trump.  Perchance he be a rogue.  Naught but the Almighty can say.  But whatever he be – true or false – he doth be elected fairly and with honesty.  For this right my brethren bled and died.  Which only casts a dark and loathsome shadow upon those who now cause mischief and mayhem protesting his election.

I have a word for them.  Take yet another draught of ale at the tavern if it pleaseth thee.  But pray be – for the nation’s sake – gracious in your loss.
